The Fiji Police Force has reported a total of 6,659 drug-related cases over the past five years, with last year marking a peak of 1,615 cases. Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci presented this data during the opening of the Annual Conference of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in Sigatoka.
Raikaci noted that the decrease in drug cases by 31% in 2021 was largely attributed to the COVID-19 restrictions, emphasizing that this statistic does not indicate a genuine reduction in drug activity within the community. The Police Force remains committed to combating drug issues through community outreach and coordinated operations, especially during the festive season, which have resulted in increased arrests.
Efforts include engagement with schools, churches, and community meetings to raise awareness, and Raikaci affirmed that the government’s commitment to addressing drug problems is evident with the establishment of a new Narcotics Bureau. He urged legal professionals to balance the government’s anti-drug agenda with the rights of individuals facing drug-related charges.
The conference, addressing these pressing issues, is set to conclude today.
This article sheds light on the ongoing challenges that Fiji faces with drug-related offenses, while also highlighting the proactive measures taken by law enforcement and the government. The establishment of the Narcotics Bureau represents a hopeful step forward in the fight against drugs, providing a framework for more focused and dedicated efforts in intervention and prevention. As initiatives grow, there is potential for communities to become more informed and resilient against substance abuse.
