A senior police officer has revealed that foreign criminal organizations, such as the Russian Mafia and Australian-linked groups, are operating within Fiji, including involvement in local drug trafficking activities. This admission was made by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Simione Ravouvou during the ongoing trial concerning the seizure of 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine in Nadi.
During his testimony at the Lautoka High Court, ASP Ravouvou acknowledged critical gaps in the Fiji Police Force’s ability to protect informants working on drug-related investigations. He stated that there is currently no formal system in place to ensure the safety of state witnesses or informants. The lack of funding further complicates efforts to establish such protective measures, which raises concerns about the willingness of informants to cooperate with authorities.
The trial, in its fourth week, has seen accusations made by the defense suggesting the involvement of foreign mafia networks in the drug case, with ASP Ravouvou agreeing to the assertion during cross-examination. He confirmed that he was in charge during the significant drug bust on January 14, 2024, which led to several arrests tied to the methamphetamine seizure.
Additionally, the courtroom discussions highlighted threats made against accused individuals, including Justin Ho, a central figure in the case. Defense lawyer Samuela Heritage mentioned that Ho’s relatives reported receiving threats, yet ASP Ravouvou denied receiving any such complaints during his tenure at the Lautoka Police Station.
