The Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua, has raised serious concerns regarding the escalating drug problem in Fiji, particularly how it is impacting children. Addressing guests at the Rotary Club Labasa’s Gala Night in Labasa, he expressed his shock at reports of parents involving their children in drug trafficking, an issue he believed was confined to larger cities like Suva.

Tikoduadua noted that the prevalence of both green and white drugs has reached alarming levels across the nation, with Labasa now facing challenges previously thought to be limited to urban areas. He emphasized the importance of community involvement in the fight against drugs, stating that communities play a crucial role in the upbringing and protection of children.

While the government holds primary responsibility for the welfare and security of its citizens, Minister Tikoduadua urged local families and community members—such as parents, grandparents, and relatives—to take ownership of this pressing issue. He affirmed that it is their duty to safeguard children and address their needs, with the government working to support their efforts.

In a hopeful note, this call to action presents an opportunity for communities to come together, strengthen their bonds, and create a safer environment for their children. Collaborative efforts between government and communities can pave the way for effective strategies to combat drug-related issues, potentially leading to a brighter future for Fiji’s youth.

This highlights the importance of grassroots initiatives and community resilience in tackling societal challenges, making it a crucial moment for collective action in Fiji.
