In Fiji, the insidious rise of drug abuse, particularly among children, has become a pressing issue, according to Home Affairs and Immigration Minister Pio Tikoduadua. Speaking at the Rotary Club Labasa’s Gala Night, he revealed his concern over disturbing reports of parents involving their children in drug trafficking within the Labasa community.
Minister Tikoduadua acknowledged the widespread nature of drug use, referring to both “green” and “white” drugs, throughout Fiji. However, he expressed deep shock at the notion that this problem has reached rural areas, impacting children as young as those in schools. Traditionally viewed as a city-centric issue, the drug epidemic’s expansion into smaller communities signifies a troubling trend that requires urgent attention.
The Minister emphasized the critical role of community involvement in combatting this crisis. He underscored that while the government bears responsibility for the nation’s safety and well-being, the onus also lies with families and community members to protect their own. He called for a united effort to address the needs and responsibilities toward their children, urging parents and relatives to take an active role in the fight against drug abuse.
This situation, while alarming, presents an important opportunity for communities to unite and address the drug issue together. With concerted efforts from families, local organizations, and the government, there is hope for gradual change and a healthier environment for future generations in Fiji. By fostering stronger community bonds and encouraging open discussions, it is possible to create a supportive network aimed at preventing drug abuse and protecting children from its devastating effects.
