The Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua, highlighted the significant drug issue in Fiji, noting that it is particularly devastating for children. Speaking at the Rotary Club Labasa’s Gala Night, he revealed his alarm at reports of parents involving their children in drug trafficking activities in Labasa, a trend that he believed was previously confined to larger cities.

Tikoduadua stated that the prevalence of both green and white drugs in Fiji is alarming, and the recent trend of parents using their children for drug distribution marks a disturbing escalation. He emphasized the necessity for community involvement in the fight against drugs, underlining that as the community nurtures and raises children, it plays a pivotal role in addressing these challenges, alongside governmental efforts.

While the government has a key role in ensuring security and welfare, Tikoduadua called on family members—parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles—to take responsibility in protecting children from such influences. This call to action encourages a collaborative approach where community members actively participate in safeguarding their youth.

In summary, the Minister’s statement serves as a wake-up call for the community to unite against the escalating drug problem affecting children in Fiji. By fostering community responsibility, there’s hope for a positive shift in combating this issue and ensuring a safer environment for future generations.

The spotlight on community action in addressing drug abuse offers a hopeful perspective, suggesting that together, communities can create change and protect their children from harmful influences.
