Fiji’s Drug Crisis: Are Parents Putting Children at Risk?

The Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration in Fiji, Pio Tikoduadua, recently highlighted the growing drug problem in the country, particularly its alarming effects on children. Speaking at the Rotary Club Labasa’s Gala Night, he expressed his dismay upon learning that some parents are turning to their own children to sell drugs, a troubling trend that has extended beyond urban centers into communities like Labasa.

Tikoduadua noted that the prevalence of both green and white drugs is well-known throughout Fiji; however, the exploitation of children for drug trafficking was a shocking revelation for him. He emphasized that it is a worrying sign of how the drug issue is infiltrating more rural areas, moving away from cities like Suva.

The Minister underscored the crucial role of community leadership in the fight against drugs, stating that, while the government has responsibilities in ensuring the welfare and safety of its citizens, the burden of care ultimately falls on families and community members. He urged parents, grandparents, and extended families to take more active roles in addressing these challenges and safeguarding their children.

This situation illuminates a vital need for increased community engagement to combat drug issues and protect the youngest members of society. It is a call to action for families to unite in fostering a safer and healthier environment for children, ensuring their well-being is prioritized over illegal activities.

In summary, while Fiji faces a dire challenge regarding drug use and its impact on children, this situation also presents an opportunity for communities to galvanize, take responsibility, and come together to combat this pressing issue. By reinforcing the importance of familial and community ties, there is hope that collective action can lead to meaningful change and a safer future for the children of Fiji.
