The Fiji Police Force has reported a total of 6,659 drug-related incidents over the last five years, with the peak coming in the previous year when 1,615 cases were documented. Acting Police Commissioner Sakeo Raikaci presented these figures during the opening of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Annual Conference held in Sigatoka.
Raikaci noted that although there was a 31% decrease in drug cases in 2021—attributed to COVID-19 restrictions—this reduction did not signify a decline in drug involvement within the community. He emphasized that the police are committed to combating this issue through proactive community engagement and targeted operations, which have led to numerous arrests and prosecutions. Ongoing festive season operations have further contributed to this enforcement effort.
In his remarks, Raikaci mentioned the government’s dedication to addressing drug-related problems, citing the establishment of a new Narcotics Bureau as a significant step forward. He also encouraged lawyers to carefully weigh the government’s anti-drug initiatives against the rights of individuals facing drug charges in court.
The conference, which seeks to address these pressing issues, is scheduled to conclude today.
This article highlights the ongoing struggle against drug-related challenges in Fiji. The government’s proactive measures and community-focused approach suggest a hopeful path forward in addressing substance abuse and related crime. As communities unite in the fight against drugs, increased awareness and collaboration could lead to more effective solutions for a safer future.
