The Fiji Police Force has reported a total of 6,659 drug-related cases over the past five years, with a peak of 1,615 cases occurring last year alone. This information was shared by Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci during the opening of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Annual Conference in Sigatoka.

Raikaci noted a significant 31% decline in drug cases in 2021, attributing this decrease to COVID-19 restrictions, but emphasized that this should not be interpreted as a reduction in drug activity. The Fiji Police continue to combat drug-related issues through community outreach and proactive operations, particularly as the festive season approaches, which has led to an increase in arrests.

To address the ongoing drug problem, the government has demonstrated its commitment by establishing a new Narcotics Bureau. Raikaci has called on legal professionals to weigh the government’s anti-drug initiatives against the rights of individuals involved in drug offenses when fulfilling their roles in the legal process.

As the DPP Conference wraps up today, the focus remains on the continuing battle against drug-related issues in Fiji, highlighting a community-backed approach and government commitment to creating a safer environment.

This article serves as a reminder of the persistent challenges associated with drug use and trafficking, but also reflects hope in the form of proactive measures taken by authorities and community engagement. The establishment of a dedicated Narcotics Bureau signifies a strengthened resolve to combat the drug crisis in Fiji.
