Fiji’s Drug Crisis: A Call to Action from the Finance Minister

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad has labeled Fiji’s drug crisis as “frightening” and has called for a unified approach to address the issue.

This statement followed a briefing from eight District Advisory Councilors (DAC) regarding community concerns during a talanoa session over the weekend. Key issues discussed included drainage problems, feeder road maintenance, blocked culverts, informal settlements, and the growing problem of illicit drugs.

While addressing the drug issue, Professor Prasad expressed his alarm and concern, particularly due to the involvement of children in drug-related activities. He emphasized that tackling the drug crisis is a shared responsibility, requiring action from not only the government but also parents and community members.

He reassured attendees of his commitment to resolving the issues raised during the meeting and took the opportunity to discuss elements of the upcoming 2024-25 National Budget. He highlighted that the Coalition Government is dedicated to supporting the community and providing necessary assistance.

Further talanoa sessions with stakeholders and community members are anticipated in the near future.
