Fiji Bati head coach Wise Kativerata has called for urgent action in combating the escalating drug problem in Fiji, expressing his frustrations at the government’s repetitive approach of conducting workshops without tangible results. During a drug awareness program at the Valelevu Youth Training Centre in Nasinu, Kativerata highlighted the critical need for proactive measures rather than prolonged discussions, which he feels have not led to any solutions.

The issue resonates deeply with Kativerata, who shared a personal connection to the crisis, revealing that his eldest son, who had secured a contract with Melbourne Storm, is currently imprisoned due to drug-related charges. He described how his son chose to engage in drug dealing instead of pursuing a rugby career, emphasizing the harsh realities of drug temptation that young people face. “They paid him a lump sum of money. That lump sum of money changed his life and he never got back to training,” Kativerata remarked.

He encouraged the youth to discover their purpose and pursue positive paths in life, underlining that education and inherent talent are keys to success. Moreover, he challenged the government to reassess its approach and consider whether continued spending on workshops is justifiable while the youth increasingly fall victim to substance abuse.

Kativerata’s sentiments echo concerns raised by community leaders about the rising drug abuse among Fijian youth, particularly links between drug use and increasing societal issues such as rising teenage pregnancies and HIV rates. For instance, Minister for iTaukei Affairs Ifereimi Vasu has echoed calls for family and community engagement to combat drug-related challenges.

While the situation poses serious challenges, leaders across Fiji are advocating for collective commitment and swift action to foster a healthier environment for future generations. Their hopeful message emphasizes that community involvement is crucial in reversing the current trends and supporting youth in making better choices, which can ultimately lead to a more promising future free from the grip of drugs.
