The Fiji Police Force has reported a staggering total of 6,659 drug-related cases over the past five years. Notably, last year saw the highest incidence, with 1,615 cases recorded. Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci presented these figures at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Annual Conference held in Sigatoka.

Raikaci noted that the significant drop of 31% in drug cases in 2021 was primarily influenced by COVID-19 restrictions; however, he emphasized that this decline did not indicate a reduction in drug-related activities. The Fiji Police Force remains committed to addressing this issue through ongoing community awareness initiatives and law enforcement operations, particularly during the festive season, which has led to an increase in arrests.

The Commissioner underscored the government’s dedication to combatting drug abuse, highlighting the recent establishment of a new Narcotics Bureau. He urged legal professionals to balance the government’s anti-drug initiatives with the rights of individuals implicated in drug offenses while performing their duties.

The DPP Conference is set to conclude today, reinforcing the ongoing dialogue on drug-related challenges and solutions in Fiji.

In conclusion, while the statistics are alarming, the proactive measures from law enforcement and community engagement highlight a collective commitment to addressing the drug crisis in Fiji. This multifaceted approach aims not only to reduce drug offenses but also to support those affected by addiction.
