The recent statistics released by the Fiji Police Force show a slight decrease in illicit drug cases for last month, which stood at 165, down from 169 during the same period last year. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu emphasized that despite this small decline, the fight against the illicit drug trade remains a high priority for the police.

A detailed breakdown of the cases indicates that 155 of the drug-related incidents involved unlawful possession, while 10 pertained to the cultivation of illegal drugs. The data further revealed that among the cases, 139 were related to marijuana, and 26 concerned methamphetamine. Tudravu assured the public of the police’s relentless efforts to dismantle the illicit drug network and disrupt its supply chain, indicating that specific operational details cannot be disclosed at this time.

In a broader context, the overall crime rate increased by 23 percent last month, with a total of 1,707 criminal cases documented. This upsurge was characterized by notable increases in serious crimes, which were reported to have risen by 13 percent. Crimes against women and children also saw worrying trends, with increases of eight and nine percent respectively. Specifically, assaults and crimes against women constituted a substantial portion of the reported incidents, prompting urgent attention from law enforcement.

These rising crime statistics highlight the ongoing challenges faced by the Fiji Police, especially as they prepare for the upcoming festive season, historically associated with increased incidents of theft and violence. The police are reportedly adjusting their strategies to address these issues effectively, reinforcing their commitment to community safety.

In light of these challenges, there is still hope for a safer community. The police’s proactive approach and willingness to address rising crime and drug issues demonstrate a commitment to improving law enforcement efforts. With continued focus and community cooperation, there is an opportunity for further reductions in crime rates, benefiting all citizens.
