The Fiji Police Force has reported the apprehension of 76 individuals across the nation this week for drug-related offenses, highlighting a significant law enforcement effort in combating substance abuse. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, emphasized that these arrests are part of the police’s ongoing commitment, as they increase operational intensity during the festive season.
Among those arrested, the oldest was a 64-year-old man at the Ba fish market, found with seven sachets of a substance believed to be marijuana. A 63-year-old carpenter was also taken into custody in Bua, possessing five green plants suspected to be marijuana. Other notable arrests include a 58-year-old man in Lautoka caught with a shopping bag containing dried leaves and over three thousand dollars believed to be proceeds from drug activities, and a 51-year-old electrician found with methamphetamine.
Interestingly, a 19-year-old farmer was arrested in Savusavu, as were two women aged 19 and 25 from Nadi, who were detained for unpaid taxi fares and subsequently found with marijuana on them. The arrests stemmed from various enforcement strategies, including stop-and-search operations, roadblocks, and raids, backed by the K-9 Unit.
This crackdown signifies the police’s determination to reduce drug offenses and enhance community safety. By increasing visibility and enforcement, the Fiji Police Force aims to foster a safer environment, especially around festive celebrations when drug use can be more prevalent.
With ongoing efforts to raise awareness and prevent drug abuse, there is hope that these initiatives will lead to a decline in drug-related activities and promote a healthier community overall.
