Fiji’s Drug Bust: Court to Hear Shocking Possession Case

Two individuals were presented in the Suva Magistrates Court on April 2, 2025, facing charges for unlawful possession of illicit drugs. The suspects, a 37-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman, were apprehended during a coordinated operation on April 1 at Howell Road. Law enforcement officials, including the Southern Division task force, the Fiji Detector Dog Unit (FDDU), and the Serious Organised Crime and Intelligence Department, seized several small zip-lock bags containing white crystals that tested positive for methamphetamine.

This operation is part of the ongoing Operation Sasamaki, which focuses on tackling illicit drug activities across all five policing divisions of Fiji. Police have reported ongoing efforts to disrupt drug cultivation, with marijuana farms being discovered in areas such as Savusavu and Tukavesi in the North, and cultivation activities noted in Kadavu and Navosa.

The Fiji Police Force is actively continuing its operations, not only arresting individuals for drug possession but also conducting thorough checks on remand prisoners in cooperation with the Fiji Corrections Service. These initiatives reflect a commitment to addressing drug-related offenses and enhancing community safety.

The ongoing crackdown on drug activities shows a united front from law enforcement, emphasizing a proactive approach to disrupt the illegal drug trade. With community support, there is a hopeful outlook towards reducing crime and ensuring a safer environment for all citizens in Fiji, as these efforts work to tackle the root causes of substance abuse. The upcoming court proceedings will play a critical role in addressing the current allegations and reinforcing the message that drug-related crimes will not be tolerated in the community.
