Fiji’s Drug Battle: Police Report Alarming Rise in Seizures

The Fiji Police Force is experiencing a rise in cases involving the unlawful possession of illegal drugs, particularly marijuana, which is the most frequently seized substance.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, reported that many of the individuals arrested are in their 20s and 30s. In the period from the 18th to the present day, a total of eighteen reports were logged across all five divisions, which included the uprooting of marijuana plants from a farm during their operations, which consisted of snap searches and house raids.

While marijuana remains the predominant drug in these cases, there have also been a few instances involving methamphetamine. ACP Driu highlighted the increasing support from the community, with more requests for police-led awareness initiatives in partnership with various organizations.

He underlined the necessity of maintaining public trust, ensuring that police officers demonstrate integrity and play an essential role in the ongoing battle against drugs. The community is encouraged to assist law enforcement by providing information through the emergency number 917 or Crime Stoppers at 919.
