According to Shamima Ali, coordinator of the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, a tragic incident earlier this year resulted in the death of a one-year-old baby due to domestic violence. This incident occurred alongside the deaths of two women killed by their partners within the same timeframe. Over the past eleven years, domestic violence has claimed the lives of 53 women in Fiji. Alarmingly, statistics reveal that three out of five women in the nation experience domestic violence, yet a mere fraction of these cases are reported to the authorities.
Mereseini Rakuita, the Principal Strategic Lead for Women and Girls at Pacific Communities, emphasized that violence against women and girls is prevalent in both public and private spheres across Fiji. She described the situation as a national crisis, pointing out that such violence severely impacts women’s health and overall well-being. It is often perpetrated by men known to the victims, frequently occurring in their own homes and sometimes perpetuated over many years or even a lifetime. Rakuita remarked that the murder of women and girls in the context of domestic violence typically culminates a prolonged history of abuse.
This grim reality underlines the urgent need for communities to address domestic violence more openly and effectively support victims. Increasing awareness and encouraging reporting can play significant roles in breaking the cycle of abuse in Fiji.
