Fiji’s Diwali Sparks Unity as Grants Expand and Sugar Farmers Benefit

As Fiji prepares to celebrate Diwali, Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh emphasized the festival’s deep significance as a beacon of hope, love, and unity, especially during challenging times. In his remarks marking the Festival of Lights, he highlighted how Diwali symbolizes peace, compassion, and the foundational values that bind diverse communities together, regardless of faith, culture, or background.

“In Fiji, Diwali has always held a special place in our hearts,” Singh stated, noting how the festival showcases the nation’s strength in diversity. He praised the joyous occasion where families from different ethnicities come together, sharing laughter, food, and the spirit of togetherness. “It is through such unity that we continue to build a stronger, more compassionate Fiji,” he added.

In line with the Coalition Government’s commitment to empowering communities, Singh detailed the investment in the Multi-Ethnic Affairs Community Grant Program, which has seen significant funding increases. Over the last financial year, more than $1.2 million was allocated to support grassroots projects across various places of worship and community halls, enhancing social and cultural spaces that promote inclusivity. This year, the government expanded the funding to $2 million, with over 1,000 applications received from a diverse range of communities, demonstrating the growing confidence and participation in these initiatives.

Turning to the sugar industry, Singh announced a special cane payment to benefit over 10,200 sugarcane farmers just in time for Diwali. This includes a government top-up that increases the fourth payment to $9.47, bringing the total payout for the 2024 crop to $101.13 per tonne. He noted this is the first instance of such compensation for pre-season burning of sugarcane, which has already assisted over 57 farmers throughout Fiji.

Singh also reminded Fijians to be mindful of those facing hardships, urging a collective spirit of support and compassion during the festive season. His message resonates with sentiments echoed by other leaders in Fiji, including Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu, who reinforced Diwali’s essence of unity and compassion integral to the nation’s multicultural identity.

As families light diyas and celebrate this Diwali, the overarching theme remains centered on community cohesion and supporting one another, illuminating a hopeful path for the future of all Fijians. The festival serves not only as an occasion for celebration but also as a powerful reminder for everyone to embody the values of kindness and mutual respect in their everyday lives.
