Fiji is making strides towards establishing direct flights to mainland China, particularly focusing on Shanghai as a key entry point. During a recent parliamentary session, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka announced that discussions surrounding the Air Services Agreement (ASA) between Fiji and China are advancing positively.
The ASA, which was first signed in 1997, will set the regulatory framework for air connections between the two nations. Presently, while there are no direct flights between Fiji and China, Shanghai has been identified as the most favorable hub. Gavoka emphasized that Shanghai Pudong International Airport’s widespread connectivity allows travelers from various regions of China to access Fiji more conveniently.
Gavoka explained that the discussions include the possibility of integrating Shanghai into the ASA and are aimed at finalizing additional terms with Chinese authorities. This collaborative momentum is expected to pave the way for timely implementation, enabling Fiji Airways to establish both direct and code-sharing services effectively.
This effort aligns with previous statements from the Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, who has underscored the importance of direct flights for boosting tourism and trade. Zhou noted that the current lack of direct connectivity hinders potential Chinese tourists’ ability to visit Fiji, despite the island’s attractions, which include stunning landscapes and a rich cultural experience.
In January 2025, only a small fraction of the over 70,000 visitors to Fiji were from China, highlighting a significant gap that direct flights could fill. With the growing interest of the Chinese middle class in international travel, establishing direct air links is seen as a monumental step toward enhancing economic ties and facilitating cultural exchange between the two countries.
As the negotiations unfold, there is growing optimism that this initiative will unlock new tourism opportunities for Fiji, encouraging a surge in Chinese tourists, which in turn will benefit the local economy. The potential for direct flights is positioned to not only enhance travel convenience but also strengthen the bilateral relationship, fostering mutual growth and understanding.
