Fiji’s Diplomatic Step: A New Chapter with Nauru

Mr. William Toganivalu, Fiji’s traveling ambassador to Pacific Island Countries and Territories, presented His Excellency David Adeang, the president of the Republic of Nauru, with his credentials as Fiji’s non-resident high commissioner to Nauru.

Ambassador Toganivalu received a formal welcome with a traditional Guard of Honour from the Nauru Police Force.

During their meeting, Ambassador Toganivalu thanked President Adeang for the warm reception and acknowledged the enduring friendship and collaboration between Fiji and Nauru, grounded in shared cultural values and a commitment to regional prosperity and development.

President Adeang reiterated Nauru’s commitment to working alongside Fiji to strengthen their bilateral relations and collaboratively address the opportunities and challenges facing the Pacific region. He also recalled his meeting in June with Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka, Fiji’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Prime Minister, where Nauru reaffirmed support for the Ocean of Peace program, aimed at promoting stability and peace in the Pacific.

Following the presentation of his credentials, Ambassador Toganivalu paid courtesy visits to several Nauruan government ministers, including Reagan Winson Aliklik, Minister of Transport (Aviation); Honorable Charmaine Scotty, Minister of Health and Medical Services; Darrina Kun, Secretary of Education; and Lionel Rouwen Aingimea, Former President and Current Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Justice, and Border Control (Immigration).

The Ambassador was also welcomed by the Fijian community in Nauru, where he participated in a Talanoa session. Fijian nationals appreciated the chance to inquire about immigration services, work contracts, and various issues of interest.

Moreover, Ambassador Toganivalu discussed innovative initiatives by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Fiji aimed at enhancing engagement with the Fijian diaspora. He highlighted the recently updated website that features a portal for diaspora members to register their contact information.

He noted that this innovation would improve the Ministry’s ability to respond in emergencies and aid Fiji’s Missions abroad in connecting with the Fijian community overseas.

Additionally, he expressed gratitude for the contributions of the Fijian diaspora to the economies of both Nauru and Fiji, emphasizing the importance of preserving cultural heritage and maintaining strong ties to one’s homeland.
