Speaker of Parliament Filimoni Jitoko has recently encouraged the Fijian diaspora in China to take advantage of the opportunities available to them. Accompanied by a group of Fijian parliamentarians, Jitoko is on a visit to China, supported by the Chinese government.
During a meeting in Beijing, he highlighted the crucial role that Fijians living abroad play as representatives of their homeland. He urged them to actively participate in nurturing the relationship between Fiji and China, emphasizing that their engagement could significantly strengthen the ties between the two countries. This trip is characterized as a fact-finding mission aimed at gathering beneficial ideas and practices that could be useful for Fiji.
While Jitoko leads the delegation, he noted that the other ministers present will take a more hands-on role in acquiring insights that can be implemented across various sectors in Fiji.
This visit is taking place against the backdrop of increasingly robust diplomatic relations between Fiji and China, with nearly five decades of history connecting the two. Concurrently, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is set to visit China soon, aiming to further enhance bilateral cooperation.
Such diplomatic exchanges are seen as promising avenues for bolstering economic and cultural partnerships that could benefit both nations. This collaborative spirit embodies a hopeful message, focusing on the potential for shared growth and prosperity. By strengthening ties with their diaspora, Fiji seeks not only to enhance international relations but also to explore new development opportunities that can benefit both Fiji and China in the future.
