Google has entered into a strategic partnership with Telecom Fiji Limited, which will significantly enhance Fiji’s digital infrastructure by sharing its terrestrial fiber optic network. This announcement was made during a recent agreement signing in Natadola by Brian Quigley, the global lead for Google Network Investments.
Quigley outlined Google’s vision, known as Pacific Connect, aimed at improving internet access across Pacific Island nations. He emphasized that the initiative focuses on establishing a hub capable of centralizing connectivity, which is essential for the region’s digital transformation. Google is building new cables that will extend directly from Fiji to key international locations, including Japan, South America, the United States, and Australia.
The arrangement with Telecom Fiji represents the fourth partnership Google has engaged in since the endeavor began last November. Quigley stated that this partnership aligns with Fiji’s national strategy for digital resilience, supporting the development of a more robust infrastructure throughout the country.
One of the significant aspects of this project is its commitment to an open connectivity approach, which allows local partners to access the fiber link network. Quigley highlighted that Google will utilize half of the available fiber links while making the remaining connections available to local businesses, thereby promoting universal access to information and services.
