Telecom Fiji and Google have embarked on a transformative journey with their new agreement to create a terrestrial fibre optic link that will connect FINTEL’s international cable landing station in Vatuwaqa, Suva, to Google’s ICT facility in Natadola. This innovative high-capacity fibre line will follow the Queens Highway corridor, facilitating seamless high-speed data transmission between the two locations.
This venture is part of the ambitious Pacific Connect initiative, aimed at strengthening connectivity across the Pacific region while ensuring long-term scalability for Fiji and neighboring areas. Telecom Fiji has been tasked with the end-to-end delivery of this critical project, which involves not just construction but also ongoing maintenance and operational support to maintain high network performance and security compliance.
The inclusion of the Bulikula and Tabua subsea cable systems at Vatuwaqa and Natadola is particularly noteworthy, as this terrestrial link fortifies Fiji’s connectivity infrastructure. It enhances data transmission speed and efficiency, which is essential for both local businesses and regional interactions.
Telecom Fiji’s Chief Executive, Charles Goundar, expressed pride in the trust Google has shown in their capability to lead this project, emphasizing its importance in establishing a world-class digital infrastructure in the Pacific. Google’s Global Network Infrastructure VP, Brian Quigley, added that the newly established link will support Fiji’s digital transformation and help bridge the existing digital divide in the Pacific.
The successful implementation of this project underscores a shared commitment to building reliable, resilient, and secure digital frameworks in the region. It represents hope not just for improved infrastructure but also for economic growth opportunities, promoting inclusivity within the rapidly evolving digital economy.
In light of these advancements, Fiji stands to gain significantly, fostering new economic initiatives and enhancing overall connectivity for its citizens and businesses alike. This initiative marks a pivotal step toward securing Fiji’s place as a leading connectivity hub in the Pacific, which could lead to further innovations and growth in various sectors.
