Digital literacy has emerged as an essential skill in today’s world, according to Fiji’s Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, who spoke at the “Drive Growth with Digital Transformation” workshop held in Nadi. Radrodro emphasized the importance of equipping students with digital tools that not only facilitate information access but also enhance critical thinking, foster innovation, and improve global competitiveness.
The workshop, organized in collaboration with Wuhan Technical University, aims to shed light on how digital transformation and artificial intelligence are influencing various sectors and how these advances can be applied in educational settings. This aligns with ongoing efforts within Fiji’s education system to enhance the integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). A recent initiative highlighted that 96% of schools recognize the importance of ICT skills for their students, which is critical to prepare them for future job markets.
Rajesh Krishna, a school principal, echoed these sentiments and stressed that while integrating AI tools in classrooms is imperative, it is crucial to use this technology responsibly. He noted the urgency in preparing students for a rapidly evolving world shaped by digital technologies.
In prior discussions, educational stakeholders have recognized challenges in technology access and teacher training. The Ministry of Education is actively addressing these issues through its ICT in Education policy, promoting initiatives aimed at ensuring that all students can benefit from technological advancements.
The educational reforms signify a hopeful future for Fiji, where the commitment to digital literacy could lead to the empowerment of the youth.
