Fiji is taking significant strides in digital connectivity, exemplified by the latest findings from the Digital Economy Report Pacific Edition 2024. The report, released by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, indicates that internet penetration in Fiji reached impressive figures between 65% and 85% of the population during 2021-2022. This remarkable growth positions Fiji as a leader among Pacific Island countries in internet usage.
According to the report, the landscape of internet access has been rapidly changing in Small Island Developing States (SIDS), with usage increasing at an annual rate of 8.4% between 2014 and 2023, outpacing the global average growth rate of 6.7%. Chad Morris, the Program Manager for e-commerce strategies in the Pacific, emphasized that while Fiji is making significant progress, disparities remain within the region. For instance, Papua New Guinea, despite a threefold surge in internet users from 2017 to 2022, still reported that only about 25% of its population was online by 2022.
This report indicates that, as of 2023, 67% of the SIDS population was online, compared to only 35% in Pacific SIDS in 2022. The continuing gap suggests a pressing need for further investment and initiatives aimed at enhancing digital infrastructure across the Pacific region.
Moreover, similar data also shows that Fiji’s internet usage is accompanied by a commitment to improving telecommunications infrastructure, with local authorities emphasizing the need for advancements to meet increasing consumer demand. This is further underlined by the recent assertion from Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister, Manoa Kamikamica, on the importance of building capabilities and inclusivity in the nation’s digital landscape.
Fiji’s journey reflects a proactive stance toward leveraging technology for economic growth and societal benefits. The government is looking to enhance digital health systems, educational resources, and agricultural efficiency by adopting advanced technologies. This not only enhances connectivity but also aims to empower citizens across various sectors, from urban entrepreneurs to rural farmers.
As Fiji invests in its digital future, the effort reflects a broader ambition to foster innovation and access, promising a more equitable digital landscape conducive to sustainable development. The proactive measures taken by the government and regional bodies provide a hopeful outlook for all Fijians as they embrace the digital economy.
