Fiji’s Digital Revival: Preserving Heritage for Future Generations

Fiji is making significant progress in the digitization of its historical records, with the National Archives recently achieving nearly 50% completion in the digitization of Indian Indentured Labour Emigration Passes. This initiative is a crucial step towards preserving and improving public access to records that are vital for understanding the socio-political foundations of Fiji.

The digitization project is part of a broader strategy aimed at enhancing the preservation of Fiji’s documentary heritage while catering to the needs of descendants of indentured laborers and displaced communities seeking to trace their roots. In addition to the Indian Emigration Passes, upcoming phases will focus on records related to the arrival of Melanesian laborers under the Polynesian Labour Trade from 1876 to 1911, and important Land Claims Commission files from 1875 to 1881.

This initiative is significant in light of increasing concerns regarding the physical deterioration of crucial records, which may be susceptible to loss or damage from natural disasters. By transitioning these records to a digital format, the National Archives aims to not only safeguard against such vulnerabilities but also promote greater transparency and accountability within the government’s record-keeping systems.

Fiji’s Cabinet has been briefed on this important project, which aligns with previous government investments, such as the $1.5 million dedicated to the digitization of the Girmit database. This commitment emphasizes the importance of cultural preservation, particularly in recognizing the historical contributions of the Girmitiya community, which plays a vital role in the nation’s multi-ethnic identity.
