The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) is currently investigating a report concerning Walesi PTE Limited, which was submitted to the commission by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communication, Manoa Kamikamica. This report, handed to FICAC four months ago, centers around a Special Audit Report revealing that from 2015 to 2022, the former government allocated a substantial $123.6 million for the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) Project and the operations of Walesi.

FICAC has taken this matter seriously, establishing a dedicated task force led by Alifereti Wakanivesi, Assistant Manager of the Economic Crimes Unit, to investigate the findings of the report. This move underscores the commission’s commitment to integrity in public spending, aiming to enhance transparency and accountability within Fiji’s digital infrastructure initiatives.

This situation highlights a crucial moment for governance in Fiji, as the investigation not only seeks to address potential discrepancies in past expenditures but also serves as a proactive measure to prevent future mismanagement of public funds. As the investigation unfolds, it is hoped that it will foster greater public trust in governmental institutions and lead to meaningful reforms in the management of state resources.

The scrutiny placed on Walesi’s financial practices may pave the way for improved oversight in public projects, emphasizing the importance of accountability to ensure effective governance and responsible use of taxpayer money in Fiji.
