Online businesses in Fiji are being urged to maintain heightened vigilance against scams and deceptive schemes. This warning was articulated by Shaheen Ali, the Permanent Secretary for Trade, Co-operatives, MSMEs and Communications, during an offline meeting with Fijian Digital Business Owners in Suva.
Addressing the growing landscape of digital MSMEs in Fiji, Mr. Ali acknowledged the opportunities these developments create while also highlighting the accompanying risks. He stated, “As opportunity increases, so too do risks. We must be vigilant against scams, misinformation, and cyber threats.”
Fijians, known for their warmth and trust, are often targeted by fraudsters. Mr. Ali underscored the importance of digital literacy, personal integrity, and community awareness to mitigate these risks. “We have seen too many cases where people have been drawn into schemes promising quick money, only to find themselves defrauded,” he cautioned, reminding business owners to be skeptical about offers that appear too good to be true.
In alignment with the Ministry’s commitment to support genuine digital businesses, initiatives are underway to foster a safer online environment. These initiatives include the development of the BusinessNOW platform for easy business registration, collaboration with organizations to provide digital and financial literacy training, the rollout of 5G, and the establishment of the Fiji Cyber Emergency Response Team (CERT) to address cyber threats effectively.
Further emphasizing safety, Mr. Ali encouraged all Fijians engaged in digital commerce to stay informed and report any suspicious activities. As the digital economy in Fiji matures, cultivating an environment that values trust, transparency, and resilience becomes essential for long-term growth.
Echoing sentiments from previous advisories, local authorities, including the Fiji Police and the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC), have similarly warned the public about the rising threat of online scams. This unified message promotes a culture of skepticism and vigilance against fraud, thereby fostering a safer digital community.
As these efforts continue, there is hope that increased awareness and education will empower individuals and businesses to recognize and thwart fraudulent schemes. By prioritizing caution and transparency in the face of emerging threats, Fiji can nurture a robust digital economy that protects its citizens.
This proactive stance reflects a broader commitment to building a resilient digital future for all Fijians.
