Fiji’s Digital ID Revolution: What to Expect?

A workshop focusing on Fiji’s National ID Programme, an essential aspect of the government’s digital economy goals, commenced in Suva last week. This initiative, a collaboration among the Reserve Bank of Fiji (RBF), the Fijian government, and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), aims to establish an identification system that will be utilized by both the public and private sectors.

Permanent Secretary for Trade Shaheen Ali highlighted the government’s dedication to the project, mentioning that the initiative seeks to create a solid eKYC (Electronic Know Your Customer) process, which is vital for empowering the populace and boosting financial inclusion. “Our goal is to create a secure and scalable national database that supports accurate and inclusive identification processes,” he stated.

Aaron Batten, the ADB’s regional director for the Pacific Subregional Office, pointed out that the National Digital ID and e-KYC align with ADB’s Fiji country partnership strategy for 2024-2028, contributing towards the goals of providing sustainable and efficient public services while building a resilient, inclusive, and efficient financial system.

RBF Governor Ariff Ali emphasized the significance of a National Digital ID system in today’s interconnected world, comparing it to a key that opens doors or facilitates access to government services. “It serves as a cornerstone for citizenship, enabling Fijians to access essential services like healthcare, education, and banking efficiently. We believe that a robust National Digital ID system will empower citizens by improving access to basic services and fostering economic growth,” said Mr. Ali.

The project is projected to take at least 36 months to complete, and a steering committee has been established to guide its progress, co-chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica, Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad, and Governor Ali.
