Telecom Fiji has announced the successful completion of the Savusavu to Labasa Fibre Project, a significant advancement in boosting digital connectivity across Vanua Levu. The project marks a crucial milestone in the development of essential telecommunications infrastructure, currently transitioning to the next phase, which will focus on distribution for community and business use.
This new fibre optic link enhances broadband speed and reliability, thereby reducing reliance on traditional microwave networks that can be easily disrupted. Telecom Fiji stated that this project is an integral part of its five-year fibre investment strategy aimed at future-proofing the nation’s telecommunications infrastructure and ensuring long-term, scalable, and secure connectivity.
A noteworthy highlight is the connection of Saivou Village, which previously lacked internet services, demonstrating Telecom Fiji’s commitment to bridging the digital divide by providing connectivity to underserved and remote areas. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized that this aligns with the Government’s Look North policy and is crucial for economic growth, education, and disaster resilience across Vanua Levu.
Goundar, the CEO of Telecom Fiji, indicated that while the backbone infrastructure is now completed, the focus will shift to ensuring that businesses, schools, and communities can optimize the benefits of this advanced connectivity. He reiterated that reliable internet is no longer a luxury but a necessity for fostering opportunities in the modern world.
Additionally, Kordia’s executive Brent La Franchies expressed pride in being part of delivering this vital infrastructure, which assures long-term connectivity benefits for Fiji’s northern communities. The investment will not only promote economic development but also enhance access to education and healthcare services, showing a positive trend towards an inclusive digital economy in Fiji.
As this infrastructure continues to develop, it brings hopes of a more connected and digitally empowered future for all Fijians. Expanding internet access paves the way for improved socio-economic conditions and resilience, fostering a brighter outlook for even the nation’s most remote areas.
