Telecom Fiji has announced a partnership with Kordia, a New Zealand-based provider of critical communication technology solutions, which is set to enhance digital connectivity for internet users in Fiji.
The agreement will see Kordia establish a crucial North transmission network in Vanua Levu, connecting the Savusavu Submarine Cable Station to the Labasa Exchange through advanced Ciena transmission equipment. This initiative represents a significant step toward strengthening Fiji’s telecommunications infrastructure. Telecom Fiji’s CEO, Charles Goundar, emphasized that the collaboration is essential for expanding the network’s capacity and reliability, especially for Vanua Levu.
Goundar added that the new transmission network will cater to the increasing demand for high-speed connectivity and digital services throughout Fiji, enabling the company to provide more robust and scalable solutions to its customers. He expressed Telecom Fiji’s commitment to driving digital transformation in the country, with the partnership playing a crucial role in achieving that goal.
Kordia brings extensive experience in designing, building, operating, and maintaining critical networks and communication infrastructure in New Zealand, Australia, and the broader Pacific region. The company is working closely with Ciena, a global leader in optical and routing systems, to tailor a solution that meets Telecom Fiji’s specific needs.
Brent La Franchie, Executive General Manager of Kordia’s Solutions business, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating their eagerness to provide advanced and future-proof connectivity for the people of Fiji. Kordia’s previous achievements in the region include the installation of Ciena equipment at InterChange Vanuatu’s subsea fibre landing stations, the marine cable network for Fintel in Fiji, and network testing and fibre training for Tonga Telecom. The partnership with Telecom Fiji and Ciena aims to ensure a successful rollout of the North transmission network, paving the way for enhanced connectivity, reliability, and capacity across Fiji’s digital landscape.
