TECH giant Google has forged a partnership with Telecom Fiji Ltd to enhance Fiji’s digital infrastructure through the construction of a terrestrial fiber optic link. This vital connection will run from Google’s ICT facility in Natadola to the FINTEL cable landing station in Vatuwaqa. The signing ceremony took place recently, marking a significant step forward for improving connectivity within the region.
Telecom Fiji’s CEO, Charles Goundar, hailed this collaboration as a monumental achievement, stating that it exemplifies a commitment to world-class standards and resilience in support of Fiji’s strategic growth within the Pacific. The agreement emphasizes the confidence in local expertise and the capability to deliver high-performance infrastructure that aligns with international standards.
As part of Google’s Pacific Connect initiative, this project aims to enhance digital connectivity across the Pacific, ensuring long-term scalability for Fiji and its neighboring regions. Brian Quigley, Google’s Global Lead for Network Investment, expressed satisfaction with the partnership, noting that the fiber optic link will support Fiji’s digital transformation while bridging the digital divide.
With the connectivity facilitated by the Bulikula and Tabua subsea cable systems, the terrestrial link promises to deliver improved reliability, speed, and efficiency in data transmission—essential elements for both local businesses and international exchange. Telecom Fiji is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining this critical infrastructure, ensuring adherence to security standards.
Previously announced advancements, like the landing of subsea cables connecting Fiji to major global locations, underline Fiji’s emergence as a pivotal hub for digital connectivity in the Pacific. This enhanced infrastructure not only paves the way for improved internet services but also represents potential economic growth opportunities for the region.
Overall, this initiative provides a hopeful outlook for Fiji, fostering greater digital inclusion and economic development as the nation transforms into a robust digital economy, serving both local communities and international markets alike.
