The newly unveiled Bulikula and Tabua subsea cables have officially landed in Vatuwaqa, Suva, marking a significant milestone in enhancing Fiji’s digital connectivity as part of the Pacific Connect initiative. This collaborative effort involves partners such as Fiji, Google, and various stakeholders, aimed at bolstering the reliability and resilience of digital infrastructure across Fiji and the broader Pacific region.

Minister for Trade, Cooperatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communication, Manoa Kamikamica, reported that a total of four new cable connections will enhance Fiji’s connectivity – with two cables landing in Suva and two in Natadola. “These infrastructures will forge direct connections between Fiji and major countries including the United States, Australia, Japan, and Chile,” stated Kamikamica, highlighting the potential for Fiji to evolve into a prominent digital connectivity hub in the Pacific.

The excitement around these cables is further complemented by the groundbreaking of Google’s new Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facility in Natadola, which will host critical terrestrial infrastructure to support the subsea systems. Brian Quigley, VP of Global Network Infrastructure for Google Cloud, expressed optimism about the cables’ impact, noting that they signify a transformative opportunity for the region. “These new systems will help close the digital divide, ensuring that Pacific communities enjoy improved and reliable connectivity,” he said.

In addition to boosting connectivity, this initiative is expected to generate significant economic benefits. The arrival of the subsea cables and the establishment of the ICT facility may create thousands of jobs, contribute positively to Fiji’s GDP, and drive innovation in sectors such as business process outsourcing and sustainable technology initiatives.

With these advancements, Fiji is positioned not just to enhance its technological capabilities but also to foster a brighter future where local communities can thrive in the digital economy. This reinforces the nation’s commitment to embracing opportunities in the global landscape, fostering collaboration, and ensuring that the benefits are shared among all Fijians.

In summary, the landing of the Bulikula and Tabua subsea cables signifies a hopeful new phase for Fiji, promising improved connectivity and economic growth that will empower its citizens in an increasingly digital world.
