Fiji is facing increasing threats from cybercrime as it advances toward a more digital economy, according to Manoa Kamikamica, the Minister for Communications. During the CyberSec Symposium in Suva, he highlighted the urgent need for cybersecurity measures to keep pace with the rapid digital transformation the country is experiencing.

The minister announced the upcoming launch of Fiji’s National Cybersecurity Strategy for 2025–2030, aimed at safeguarding critical infrastructure, data systems, and citizens from escalating cyber threats. Kamikamica warned that a singular cyberattack could potentially reverse Fiji’s advancements in digital development, using the recent ransomware attack on Tonga’s government as a cautionary example.

To fortify its defenses, Fiji has activated its Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) and is committed to international agreements such as the Budapest Convention and the forthcoming UN Cybercrime Treaty. Kamikamica noted that this comprehensive approach to cybersecurity necessitates involvement from all sectors of society, moving beyond a mere governmental responsibility.

Fiji’s efforts extend to significant digital investments, including improvements in satellite connectivity and the introduction of the Google Bulikula and Tabua subsea cables. These initiatives are positioning Fiji as a key digital hub in the region.

This proactive stance toward cybersecurity not only aims to protect Fiji’s internal systems but also sets a collaborative example for other Pacific nations in creating a safer digital environment. The systemic development of cybersecurity frameworks, alongside partnerships with international allies including Australia, illustrates a hopeful path forward, fostering regional stability and resilience against cyber threats.

Overall, Fiji’s commitment to advancing its cybersecurity landscape reflects an optimistic direction toward a secure digital future, inspiring collective efforts across the Pacific for a connected and safe online ecosystem.
