Telecom Fiji and Google have forged a significant partnership aimed at improving Fiji’s digital infrastructure. The agreement announced on June 9 revolves around the establishment of a high-capacity terrestrial fiber optic link that will connect FINTEL’s international cable landing station in Vatuwaqa with Google’s ICT facility in Natadola.

This initiative falls under the broader Pacific Connect program, which emphasizes bolstering connectivity and resilience across the Pacific region. The fiber link will predominantly route along the Queens Highway, ensuring efficient and high-speed data transmission between the essential landing points associated with the Bulikula and Tabua subsea cable systems. The upgrade promises to significantly enhance internet speed, stability, and security for both local and regional users.

Leading the execution of this ambitious project, Telecom Fiji will oversee the complete design, construction, and ongoing maintenance of the link, adhering to international performance and security standards. Telecom Fiji CEO Charles Goundar highlighted this initiative as a testament to the company’s commitment to creating world-class digital infrastructure in the Pacific.

Brian Quigley, Google Cloud’s Vice President for Global Network Infrastructure, echoed similar sentiments, underscoring the project’s critical role in fostering digital growth within Fiji and bridging the regional digital divide. He stated that Fiji is coming into its own as a central connectivity hub for the Pacific, facilitating broader access and supporting digital transformation throughout the area.

The collaboration between Telecom Fiji and Google not only reflects their shared vision of advancing digital infrastructure but also instills hope for enhancing local economies and creating opportunities for growth throughout the region. This project stands as a pivotal step towards improving connectivity and supporting sustainable economic development, marking a promising future for Fiji and its people in the evolving digital landscape.
