Fiji’s Digital Evolution: A Roadmap for a Tech-Driven Future

Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, recently highlighted the nation’s ongoing progress in digital technology while emphasizing the necessity for further advancements. According to the International Telecommunication Union’s ICT Development Index, Fiji is currently positioned at 107th out of 176 countries regarding its ICT infrastructure. This ranking signals the need for continued investment in digital capabilities and infrastructure development.

Kamikamica noted that although Fiji is among the more developed economies in the Pacific, there is significant room for improvement. He pointed out that the digital economy is expanding at a rate surpassing global GDP, underscoring the government’s commitment to strategically harness emerging technologies. This includes enhancing the nation’s cyber security and engaging in regional and global digital frameworks.

A critical component of this initiative is the newly launched five-year National Digital Strategy 2025-2030, which aims to strengthen Fiji’s digital ecosystem. This comprehensive strategy focuses on key pillars such as boosting digital infrastructure, fostering innovation, and ensuring digital inclusion, particularly for underserved communities. The overall goal is to create a more equitable digital landscape that empowers everyone from urban entrepreneurs to rural farmers.

The government’s proactive approach and investment in digital literacy and infrastructure indicate a promising outlook for the future of Fiji’s digital economy. As Fiji continues to refine its strategies and implement key initiatives, the potential for growth and improvement for all Fijians remains bright and full of opportunities.
