Diabetes Fiji has put forth a request for a $10.5 million grant in the upcoming 2025-2026 national budget to enhance diabetes services throughout the nation. Following a previous allocation of $5.91 million last year, the Chief Executive, Marawa Kini, believes that the increase in funding will significantly bolster the organization’s programs and improve healthcare infrastructure, along with developing the medical workforce dedicated to supporting those living with diabetes.

In the wake of limited resources, Diabetes Fiji has already rolled out numerous successful initiatives, such as peer support groups, youth-focused diabetes programs, school outreach activities, corporate wellness screenings, and specialized training for wound care. Kini emphasized the importance of increased funding, stating, “We go where others don’t — but our reach is limited by funding, lack of infrastructure and human resources.” He urges that the next budget should prioritize wellness and prevention, framing it as a potential lifesaving budget for the people of Fiji.

Additionally, Diabetes Fiji supports the introduction of a targeted tax on sugary beverages, proposing that the revenue generated from this tax be dedicated to programs tackling non-communicable diseases, including subsidies for essential medical supplies such as insulin and testing strips.

Moreover, the organization advocates for improved collaboration between NGOs and governmental health ministries to minimize duplication of efforts, streamline referral systems, and ensure resources yield maximum efficiency. Achieving these objectives could greatly enhance the healthcare landscape for individuals living with diabetes while offering a hopeful pathway towards better health solutions in Fiji.

The increasing awareness and proactive measures discussed reflect a promising outlook for improved public health and economic stability in the country, essential in light of ongoing challenges related to diabetes.
