The Viti Roofing Devo Babas, winners of the 2024/2025 Fiji Bitter 7s series, are set to showcase their talent in Papua New Guinea as they participate in the three-day 2025 NiuPower KMHL Sports Tok Rugby 7s tournament. This event will take place at the Santos National Football Stadium and Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby.
The Devo Babas are one of 28 teams in the senior men’s division and are joined by 10 women’s teams and 16 under-20 teams. They are competing not only to represent Fiji but also to commemorate Papua New Guinea’s 50th independence anniversary. The women’s team, Tagimoucia Ranadi, is accompanying them as the other Fijian representative at the tournament.
Eager to capitalize on their recent successes, which include a remarkable winning streak in various Fiji tournaments such as Wairiki, Labasa, and Savusavu, the Devo Babas have been fundraising to support their travel to PNG. This included hosting a “Blue Note Night” in Namaka, Nadi, where attendees contributed to the team’s journey.
Support from their fans in PNG has been warmly extended through the team’s social media, amplifying the anticipation for their matches against a diverse array of competitors. The Devo Babas believe that this experience will not only enhance their skills but also uplift the spirit of rugby throughout the region.
As they head into this international competition, the Devo Babas carry with them the hopes and support of their community, embodying the passion and resilience that characterizes Fijian rugby. This tournament represents another step forward for the team and illustrates how sport can foster unity and inspire future generations. The excitement surrounding their participation highlights the cultural importance of rugby in Fiji, promising an exhilarating weekend ahead for fans and players alike.
