Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister resigns amid FICAC charges

Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica has officially tendered his resignation from the Cabinet, effective immediately. This decision has been confirmed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who received formal communication from Kamikamica regarding his departure.

In his statement, Prime Minister Rabuka acknowledged Kamikamica’s decision to step down from his positions in the Cabinet and as Deputy Prime Minister. Kamikamica, who is expected to return to Fiji tomorrow, will retain his role as a Member of Parliament while he addresses serious charges brought against him by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). These charges include perjury and providing false information to a public servant, stemming from inquiries related to the controversial appointment of Barbara Malimali as FICAC Commissioner.

Rabuka expressed his acceptance of Kamikamica’s resignation and noted that Kamikamica remains committed to the government and the people of Fiji. In the interim, Rabuka will oversee Kamikamica’s ministerial duties until further notice.

This situation brings to the forefront ongoing discussions about political integrity and accountability in Fiji. Kamikamica’s legal challenges highlight the public’s demand for transparency and improvement within the political landscape, which has been a point of concern following the recent turmoil surrounding the appointment of FICAC Commissioner.

While the circumstances surrounding Kamikamica’s resignation reflect a challenging chapter for Fiji’s leadership, there is hope that these developments may pave the way for reforms in governance and the restoration of public trust. The emphasis on accountability underscores a collective aspiration for a transparent and stable political framework that resonates with the citizens’ expectations for the future of Fiji.
