Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, highlighted the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, emphasizing his message of peace, inclusivity, tolerance, and ethical conduct. As Fiji’s Muslim community celebrates the birthday of the founder of Islam, Professor Prasad urged reflection on these principles.
He acknowledged the vital role of various religious groups in advancing the social, ethical, moral, and religious values that form the foundation for social, economic, and political progress in the country. “As national leaders, we must recognize the significant contributions by all faiths, particularly the Muslim community, which has been and will continue to be a key participant in our collective advancement,” he stated.
Professor Prasad further emphasized that fostering lasting peace, harmony, and tolerance is essential for promoting inclusivity, equality, dignity, and justice. He recalled the historical moment in 1974 when the National Federation Party, under Opposition Leader Hon Siddiq Moidin Koya, negotiated with then-Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara to designate the birthdays of Prophet Muhammad and Diwali as public holidays in honor of the Indo-Fijian community, marking a significant bipartisan effort for the country’s unity.
In closing, he extended warm wishes to the Muslim community for a blessed celebration of their Prophet’s birthday in Fiji’s diverse society.
