Fiji’s government has confirmed that no Fijians have been deported back to Fiji from the United States following the executive order from former President Donald Trump aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration. Minister for Immigration Viliame Naupoto stated, “There’re none that have been coming back deported so far,” indicating that there has been no communication from U.S. authorities regarding any deportations.

As of now, statistics reveal that about 353 Fijians are under final orders of removal issued by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Despite the uncertainty and anxiety experienced by Fijians living in the U.S., particularly those lacking legal status, Minister Naupoto emphasized that Fiji has not received any notice from the U.S. about impending deportations. “We are hoping that they will let us know in advance if they (Fijians) are coming, but for now, there is nothing,” he added.

Importantly, arrangements are in place for the Immigration Department staff to be informed of any returning citizens, prioritizing their safe reintegration back into Fiji’s society. This situation reflects the ongoing anxiety among undocumented Fijians in the U.S., who are primarily concerned about their status under strict immigration policies and the implications of potential deportation.

This development highlights the need for continued communication and collaboration between Fiji and U.S. immigration agencies. While the situation remains uncertain, Fiji’s government is prepared to provide support for any citizens who may be deported in the future.

In summary, the lack of immediate deportations provides a temporary reprieve for Fijians in the U.S., but it also underscores the critical need for awareness and advocacy regarding their rights. The hope remains that the Fijian authorities will be notified in advance of any deportations, allowing for a smoother reintegration process for their returning citizens.
