The Chair of the Electoral Law Reform Commission, Daniel Fatiaki, is urging the public to actively participate in forthcoming consultations regarding electoral laws that significantly impact citizens’ lives. He emphasized the importance of such consultations in a democratic society, asserting that it is essential for the public to express their views on issues related to voting, political representation, and overall participation in the democratic process.
Fatiaki described the current situation as one characterized by imposition and a lack of public input, stating that the time has come for the community to be heard regarding how they want their electoral framework to function. He stressed that the opportunity for public consultation has arrived, indicating that it is a long-overdue process that will allow people to contribute meaningfully to democracy.
This week, the commission’s team will begin consultations on Ovalau Island and will later proceed to Rotuma, ensuring coverage across various regions in Fiji. This initiative is part of a broader attempt to collect valuable public feedback on critical reforms, which aim to address concerns about representation, particularly the underrepresentation of women in Fijian politics.
The ongoing engagement efforts reflect a hopeful trajectory for Fiji’s democracy, encouraging citizens to take an active role in shaping their political landscape. By facilitating discussions and inviting feedback, the commission aims to create a more inclusive electoral system that embodies the aspirations and voices of all Fijians. This initiative marks a significant step toward fostering greater civic engagement and enhancing public confidence in the electoral process.
