The Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs in Fiji is actively working to identify key priorities in preparation for the 2025/2026 National Budget announcement. Minister Pio Tikoduadua underscored the critical need to implement the National Security Strategy (NSS) during recent planning sessions within the ministry.

A central goal is to bolster the Defence headquarters, which will serve as a foundation for future governance policies. The ministry is also in the process of establishing the National Security and Defence Council, with legislation currently underway. To facilitate this process, a legal consultant from Australia has been engaged, aiming to lay the necessary groundwork for these crucial security reforms.

Minister Tikoduadua also highlighted the importance of conducting a thorough review to guarantee that veterans receive the care and support they deserve. He expressed optimism regarding future consistent financial assistance and innovative business models designed to benefit veterans within the upcoming budgetary framework.

In addition, the review of the RFMF Act is progressing, which is an essential step in aligning military operations with current expectations and challenges. Tikoduadua noted that having updated legislation is instrumental in guiding the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) to meet both present and future security demands in accordance with the NSS.

These initiatives resonate with previous discussions surrounding the modernization of military capabilities and the ongoing National Security and Defence Review (NSDR). This holistic approach demonstrates the government’s commitment to preparing Fiji for modern security threats, optimizing military operations, and enhancing the effectiveness of defense forces. By emphasizing support for veterans and updating legal structures, Fiji is paving the way for a more secure and stable future, fostering hope among its citizens and strengthening trust in governance.
