Fiji’s Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, has strongly defended his recent 42-day overseas trip amidst public scrutiny about its purpose and duration. He asserted that the journey is a duty rather than a leisure trip, primarily aimed at visiting Fijian troops engaged in various international peacekeeping missions. This includes operations with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force in the Golan Heights, the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization in Jerusalem and Tiberias, and the Multinational Force and Observers in Sinai.

Drawing on his own experiences as a former UN peacekeeper in Lebanon, Tikoduadua underscored the importance of personal interactions with service members on the ground, describing views that assume video calls could suffice as naive and offensive. He emphasized that the trip aims to emphasize Fiji’s unwavering commitment to international peace and security, as well as to honor the men and women of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces currently in service.

Addressing concerns regarding the trip’s expenses, the Minister clarified that all travel funding aligns with government policies, with certain costs covered by host nations, thereby ensuring fiscal responsibility. While acknowledging pressing domestic issues, he noted that national security extends beyond Fiji’s borders, reinforcing the need for such international engagements.

Expected to return on May 25, Tikoduadua’s itinerary includes strategic discussions in Europe and the U.S., including participation in the 2025 Ministerial Peacekeeping Meeting in Berlin, which highlights Fiji’s role in global peacekeeping strategies. This proactive approach reflects an optimistic view for future international partnerships in peacekeeping efforts.

Overall, Tikoduadua’s visit is seen as an opportunity to reinforce Fiji’s dedication to its military personnel, promote peace, and enhance international collaboration for security. His commitment to acknowledging the sacrifices of Fijian troops abroad illustrates a compassionate leadership approach aimed at ensuring that every soldier feels valued and supported.
