Fiji’s Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, is currently embarking on a significant journey to meet Fijian soldiers deployed across various international peacekeeping missions. This trip, which takes him to the Middle East, is framed as a commitment to transparency and accountability amid public interest regarding the use of state funds for such travel.

Minister Tikoduadua emphasized that transparency remains crucial when public funds are involved, stating, “When the public asks for clarity on matters of state responsibility… it’s important we provide honest, direct answers.” He noted that this delegation is smaller compared to previous administrations, which often saw multiple high-level officials touring these areas.

This trip, which is part of Tikoduadua’s broader initiative to connect directly with troops, covers critical locations in the Middle East where Fijian peacekeepers are stationed, including the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force in the Golan Heights and the Multinational Force and Observers in Sinai. He highlighted the necessity of visiting these sites, stating, “I will not pick and choose which deployments are ‘worth the airfare’ – as they all are.”

In addition to reinforcing Fiji’s commitment to international peace and security, this visit serves to personally acknowledge the sacrifices of Fijian soldiers, a view strengthened by Tikoduadua’s own experience as a former peacekeeper. He aims to bring back the voices and concerns of the soldiers to ensure they feel valued and prioritized by their government.

Financially, the Minister has assured that travel costs will be meticulously managed, with certain expenses covered by host nations, thereby aligning with government fiscal policies. He also addressed potential concerns about pressing domestic issues, assuring that national security extends to the well-being of soldiers abroad.

Overall, Tikoduadua’s journey reflects a proactive and compassionate approach to leadership, emphasizing the importance of human connection with those who serve in challenging environments and fostering Fiji’s role in global peacekeeping efforts. His anticipated return on May 25 will further underscore the collaborative spirit in ensuring the welfare of Fijian military personnel.
