Fiji’s Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, has emphasized the urgent need for improved support for Fijian peacekeepers during his ongoing 42-day overseas mission. Visitations to troops stationed in the Golan Heights and other locations have illuminated significant gaps in equipment, logistics, and gender equity in military deployments. Particularly concerning is the low representation of women in peacekeeping roles, which Tikoduadua has deemed a structural issue requiring policy and institutional reform.

During his visit to Fijian personnel with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), Tikoduadua stressed the importance of consistent leadership and mentorship on the ground. He reaffirmed Fiji’s enduring commitment to international peace operations while advocating that effective deployment must be met with adequate support systems.

Tikoduadua’s itinerary further includes stops at UN missions in Jerusalem and Tiberias, as well as a visit to the headquarters of the Multinational Force and Observers in Sharm el-Sheikh, and leadership meetings in Rome. His participation in the upcoming 2025 Ministerial Peacekeeping Meeting in Berlin and discussions in Washington, D.C. aim to explore new cooperative opportunities, including enhancements to veteran services and defense reform.

The Minister’s commitment to visiting the troops signifies a recognition of their sacrifices and aims to return with insights into their needs and concerns. This initiative not only strengthens Fiji’s military presence on the international stage but also underscores a hopeful outlook for enhanced international collaborations that value and support the contributions of Fijian forces in global peacekeeping.

The proactive approach taken by Tikoduadua reflects an understanding that personal connections and tangible support are essential when addressing the welfare of those serving in challenging environments. As Fiji continues to make significant contributions to peacekeeping efforts worldwide, there lies potential for even greater recognition and support for its military personnel.
