Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru has encouraged Fiji’s deaf rugby players to draw on their strength, preparation, and faith as they gear up for the historic 2025 Pacific Rim Deaf Rugby Sevens Tournament in Australia. This inspiring message was delivered during the official i-tatau ceremony, where both the men’s and women’s teams were farewelled for their groundbreaking endeavor.

Saukuru emphasized the significance of this event, as it will mark the first-ever Pacific Rim Deaf Rugby Sevens Tournament to be held in Gold Coast, Australia. “You are making history for the region,” he stated. He expressed gratitude towards the coaches, officials, and medical staff whose invaluable support has allowed the athletes to qualify for this prestigious tournament. He also recognized the sacrifices made by the players’ families and supporters.

A total of 27 athletes—13 women and 14 men—will proudly represent Fiji in this competition, set to take place from June 28-29, where they will face teams from Australia, Japan, Samoa, Argentina, and the Barbarians. Reminding the players of the Fiji Deaf Association’s motto, ‘Deaf Can Do,’ Saukuru encouraged them to embrace the challenges ahead with pride and determination.

This tournament reflects not only the progress being made in inclusive sports within Fiji but also serves as a platform for empowering athletes with disabilities. Fiji’s participation is expected to inspire a wider appreciation of deaf rugby in the region, highlighting the resilience and talent of these athletes as they step into the international arena.

The enthusiasm and support surrounding this event offer a positive outlook for the future of deaf rugby in Fiji, making it an exciting moment in the history of the nation’s sporting community.
