Fiji’s national deaf rugby teams are set to make history as they don the white jersey for the first time in an international tournament. The men’s and women’s squads are preparing for the inaugural Pacific Rim Deaf Sevens Tournament, taking place in Australia later this month.

Hosted by the Australian Deaf Rugby Union, this groundbreaking event will feature leading deaf rugby teams from across the region. Fiji head coach Tevita Rokoqiqi confirmed that both teams have been diligently training and are now focused on their final preparations before departing for Australia next week. Currently, the players are attending a one-week training camp at the Pacific Theological College in Suva.

Expressing gratitude for the support from Fiji Rugby and the Fiji Sports Commission, Rokoqiqi reflected on the blend of young talent and seasoned players in the squads, all eager to represent their nation. The tournament is particularly significant as it marks a major milestone for deaf rugby in the Pacific, offering athletes a platform to showcase their skills and foster national pride.

The men’s team will compete against teams from Australia, Japan, and Samoa, while the women’s side will face Australia and a Barbarians team. The competition is scheduled to be held in Gold Coast, Australia, from June 28-29.

This event underscores the growth of inclusive sports in Fiji and highlights the expanding opportunities for athletes with disabilities. The participation of these teams not only seeks to break barriers but also aims to inspire and uplift the community.

Fiji’s participation in this inaugural event is expected to draw attention and support, enriching the country’s sporting culture and showcasing the resilience and determination of its athletes. As they prepare to make their mark on this historic stage, there is a sense of excitement and hope for the future of deaf rugby in the region.
