The Fiji Deaf Rugby team is set to depart for Australia tomorrow to participate in the highly anticipated Pacific Rim Deaf Rugby 7s tournament. The team’s journey was marked by encouraging words from Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, who presented them with their I-Tatau at a ceremony held at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva.
During the event, Minister Saukuru emphasized the importance of representing Fiji with pride, unity, and determination. He inspired the players, saying, “As you embark on this journey to represent Fiji to Australia, take comfort in knowing that God is with you, providing strength and support every step of the way.” His motivational address aimed to reinforce the team’s role as ambassadors for their country.
The Minister also expressed gratitude towards the parents, family members, and coaches for their continuous support in shaping the players into the athletes they are today. As the tournament unfolds over the next two days, the team competes not only for victory but also to foster a spirit of inclusion and pride within the community.
This event aligns with the growing momentum of inclusive sports within Fiji, particularly highlighted by the participation of both men’s and women’s national deaf rugby teams in recent tournaments. The inaugural Pacific Rim Deaf Sevens Tournament represents a significant milestone for the athletes and serves as a platform to showcase their talents on an international stage.
Fiji’s involvement in such tournaments is a testament to the resilience and determination of its athletes. By empowering athletes with disabilities through sports, the initiative promotes not only skill development but also inspires hope and unity among the community. As these athletes prepare for action, there is a collective anticipation and support from fellow Fijians hoping for success.
