Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica has revealed that in Fiji, 92 terabytes of data are utilized monthly for accessing pornographic or adult-related content. In a recent Ministerial Statement, Kamikamica highlighted that adult content has established a significant presence in the digital landscape, consuming a considerable portion of internet traffic.
He noted that within a three-month period, approximately 626 terabytes of data were downloaded, placing this activity among the top 10 in terms of data usage. To put this into perspective, 626 terabytes is roughly equivalent to the contents of 100 million books.
Kamikamica emphasized the unmistakable impact of adult content on internet consumption, stating, “The numbers do not lie… we can be assured that the industry is huge.” In response to these findings, the Cabinet has authorized the formation of a National Taskforce aimed at addressing pornography and understanding its societal risks in Fiji. This task force is expected to provide recommendations for effectively tackling these challenges.
The Deputy Prime Minister assured that the initiative represents more than just a symbolic gesture; it reflects the Coalition Government’s serious commitment to take action. He conveyed that this initiative is a concrete step toward enhancing community safety and protecting vulnerable citizens.
Furthermore, Kamikamica mentioned that the government is working on a Cabinet paper to facilitate Fiji’s participation in the WeProtect Global Alliance, a global task force focused on combating child sexual abuse online, through the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Women and Children.
