The launch of the Priority Infrastructure Programme (PIP) is set to provide crucial support for CWM Hospital, specifically targeting urgent high-risk areas as preparations for a comprehensive redevelopment move forward. Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu emphasized that the PIP is a significant initial step stemming from a DFAT-commissioned master plan, designed to ensure that CWM can operate safely while the long-term rebuilding process is underway.
Dr. Lalabalavu indicated that with essential data, assessments, and funding now in place, the Health Ministry is ready to transition directly into the implementation phase of the programme. He stated, “PIP will allow these areas to be touched up and fixed, while at the same time allowing some functionality and continuity of CWM, before we reach a timeline on the availability of the master plan that will guide what the next phase of things to be improved.”
Detailed assessments have pinpointed immediate safety concerns within the hospital. Dr. Lalabalavu highlighted specific areas needing urgent attention, including roofing repairs, storage enhancements, and the improvement of sanitation facilities, particularly to bolster fire safety measures within the hospital environment.
On the funding front, Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, Peter Roberts, confirmed an allocation of $14.5 million towards these essential repairs. He remarked, “These works will extend the life of existing facilities and support continuity of services while planning for the future.”
Although the master plan for the new or upgraded CWM Hospital will require time to finalize, the immediate rollout of the PIP ensures that necessary safety and functionality improvements are prioritized now. This proactive approach reflects a commitment to safeguarding healthcare services during a critical transition period for CWM Hospital.
The programme not only addresses pressing infrastructure needs but also signifies a hopeful step towards a more resilient and secure healthcare facility for the community.
